       January may bring cooler temperatures to the Lowcountry, but the inshore fishing remains strong for anglers willing to adapt to the winter bite. Water temperatures have dipped into the upper 40's and low 50's, leading to clearer waters and more concentrated fish.

Redfish Action is Hot

      This time of year, redfish are schooling up in large numbers on the mudflats and around shallow oyster beds. With the water clarity improving, sight fishing has been excellent on calm, sunny days. Smaller artificials like Missle Baits Spunk Shad rigged on a light jighead have been working well, but live shrimp and mud minnows remain foolproof options. Be sure to approach quietly, as these fish can be skittish in the clear, shallow water.

These fish are feeding on barnacles and small crustaceans, so fiddler crabs or shrimp on a sweeper jig are the best bets. They can be tricky biters, so patience and a light touch are necessary to hook up.
